The UAE Cyber Security Council recently reported that the country faces over 200,000 cyberattacks daily, primarily targeting its critical sectors. These attacks, believed to be originating from cyberterrorist groups in 14 different countries, have been closely monitored and pinpointed through advanced tracking methods. Authorities emphasized that these threats are being met with a robust defense strategy, utilizing the latest cybersecurity technologies. The government sector is the most targeted, accounting for 30% of all cyberattacks. Other sectors under significant threat include finance and banking (7%), education (7%), as well as technology, aviation, and healthcare (4% each). The remaining 44% of attacks are spread across other critical industries. These cyberattacks vary in nature, with information technology and infrastructure being the primary focus, representing 40% of the overall incidents. File-sharing systems are also a key target, accounting for 9%, followed by vulnerabilities in databases, which account for 3% of the attacks. Ransomware remains a major concern, with the infamous “Blackcat” threat group responsible for 51% of all ransomware-related attacks.
Key Attack Patterns Identified
The Cyber Security Council’s latest report highlights the key methods used by cyberterrorists and the types of attacks impacting critical sectors. Incorrect configurations remain a leading cause of breaches, accounting for 27% of all attacks. Malware-based attacks follow closely, making up 22%, while scanning and login attempts represent 15% of the total. Phishing and unauthorized access each contribute 15%, and web attacks, along with other illegal activities, account for the remaining 11%. The Council also outlined the most dangerous tactics employed by cybercriminals targeting essential infrastructure. Denial-of-service attacks on endpoint devices are the most common, comprising 39% of all cyberterrorist activities. Encryption and data leakage attacks come in second, accounting for 37%. Breaches involving internet-connected applications also remain a major concern, responsible for 24% of attacks. Ransomware attacks continue to be a significant threat, making up 7% of the total incidents.
One of the most alarming trends highlighted by the Cyber Security Council is the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cyberattacks. The report indicates a significant rise in AI-powered threats, which are increasingly difficult for traditional cybersecurity systems to address. These attacks go beyond deepfakes and social engineering tactics, as cybercriminals are leveraging AI to enhance malware and ransomware programs, making them more adaptive and harder to detect.
